Pistol Pete Maravich’s autographs are considered among the rarest and most sought-after in basketball collecting, with scarcity driven by his short post-retirement signing period and his reluctance to sign. Pete Maravich was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1987, just months before his death from a heart attack in 1988 at age 40. This meant that most of his autographed items came from a very narrow window — primarily the mid-1980s, after his retirement and after his conversion to Christianity. He was known to be a difficult signer, often turning down requests by mail or in person. As a result, the supply of his autographs is extremely limited, and certified examples command high prices. His signature style varied over time — he used his full name, “Pistol Pete,” or a combination, and later added Bible verses after his name. At LSU, he set the NCAA Division I career scoring record with 3,667 points over three seasons, averaging 44.5 points per game in his senior year — a record that still stands. His father, Press Maravich, coached him from an early age, instilling a unique dribbling style that earned him the nickname “Pistol” for his flair and showmanship. In the NBA, Maravich played 10 seasons, mostly with the Atlanta Hawks and New Orleans Jazz. He averaged over 24 points per game for much of his career, led the league in scoring in 1976-77, and scored a then-NBA record 68 points in a single game. His “showtime” style — no-look passes, between-the-legs dribbles, and flashy lay-ups — made him a fan favorite and a charismatic performer. Maravich’s combination of elite scoring ability, showmanship, and his untimely death at 40 has cemented his status as a mythical figure in basketball. His autographs, therefore, are not just collectible — they are part of a legend.
